WOLFY AT TIMES
By the time Adams had finished her coffee, Collins had texted the details of Chloeâs car to her. She left Rory to continue swearing at his non-alcoholic still, managing not to mention the fact that it smelled like a stray match could result in more dead chickens.
âIâll keep you a bottle,â he said as he walked her to her car.
âI think Iâll let you test it on someone else first,â she said, and he shook his head.
âAdmit to one small explosion and no one trusts you anymore.â
Adams drove back down to the collection of outbuildings, paying attention to the little printed parking this way signs now. They were stuck to gardening stakes and jammed into the verges, and sheâd been so intent on getting to the brewery to meet Chloe she hadnât paid much attention to them on the way in. In fact, sheâd driven right past the designated field. There were only half a dozen cars in it, all huddled under a strip of shade cast by a large tree. No one seemed to be monitoring it or directing anything, so she simply drove in and pulled up behind the cars, leaning over the wheel as she examined them. No old green Vauxhall Astra. She double-checked the plate number on her phone anyway, in case witches had ways of disguising their cars, but there wasnât even a remote match.
Adams sat there for a moment longer, fingers tapping on the wheel, then got out and circled the field. She wasnât sure what she was looking for, exactly. The ground was dry after a surprisingly hot summer, and even if sheâd been able to find tyre tracks, she had nothing to match them to. But sometimes just walking settled things into place, the mind clearing and connections rising to the surface as the clutter settled. She supposed it was possible Chloe could, for some reason, have crept out of the brewery via the loading doors then ducked into the woods, so avoiding all the cameras. She couldâve then circled the buildings, got back to her car, and driven off. And Adams had been calling her from the pay-as-you-go, so maybe she didnât answer unknown numbers for personal, witchy reasons.
All of that was unlikely, but not impossible. And what was the other option? Marcus had realised what Chloe was up to, jumped her in front of however many punters were already at the tasting, then bundled her into a van pulled up to the storeroom? Or he had some other, hidden room Adams had yet to find? Maybe, but how to find out? She looked around for Dandy, but heâd vanished while she was having her coffee, leaving Roryâs dogs whining, and hadnât reappeared since sheâd left.
A message beeped onto her phone. Itâs Collins. New number.
Got it, she texted back. Can you check any vans registered to NA, or used by them? Thinking they may have moved something. Which was both vague enough to be confusing to Collins, and probably not vague enough to throw off anyone snooping.
